Most travelers pick a base first and fill in the days afterwards. These pages list every seasonal event within day-trip range of a city, so you can see what is on while you are there.
“Day-trip range” is measured as a straight-line radius from the city's main station, set per city rather than as one national number — the practical reach of a day out from Tokyo is not the same as from Kanazawa. Where two cities would return almost the same list, only the larger one gets a page: Kamakura, Hakone and Yokohama sit inside Tokyo's radius, and Nara and Kobe inside Osaka's, so those spots appear on the bigger city's page instead of on a near-duplicate of their own.
