Fushimi Inari Taisha, the head shrine of Japan's Inari shrines and home of the famous tunnels of vermilion torii gates, is one of Kyoto's biggest New Year destinations. Food stalls line the approach from New Year's Eve, the prayer halls open at midnight as the year turns, and the crowds pour through the torii gates for the first days of January.

Background

Inari is the kami of rice and prosperity, which makes Fushimi Inari a traditional place to pray for business success at the start of the year. The thousands of torii gates up the mountain are donated by individuals and companies.

Getting there

Right outside JR Inari Station (JR Nara Line, two stops from Kyoto Station), or about 5 min walk from Fushimi-Inari Station on the Keihan Line.

Tips

• At the last New Year (2026), food stalls ran from New Year's Eve to January 5, and New Year prayers started at midnight on January 1 (paused 5:00–7:00 AM for a ceremony). The 2027 schedule is announced by the shrine in December.
• The shrine's car parks were closed from December 30 to January 6 — come by train.
• Goshuin (shrine stamps) were given only as pre-written sheets during the New Year period.
• The torii-gate trail up Mount Inari is quieter the higher you climb; most New Year visitors stay near the main hall.
