Hasedera is Kamakura's temple of flowers, terraced up a hillside above the sea, and in autumn it stages the town's only full-scale foliage illumination. The maples around the ponds and lower garden peak late November to early December — some of the latest color in the Kanto region. During the autumn special viewing, held in that window, the grounds stay open after sunset with the gardens lit until the 7:00pm gate close, and the lit hillside glowing above the lantern-lined paths is worth planning an evening around. Admission is ¥400.
Background
Hasedera's origins reach back to the eighth century by temple tradition. Its main hall enshrines an eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the bodhisattva of mercy, over nine meters tall — one of the largest wooden statues in Japan — carved, legend says, from the same camphor tree as the Kannon of Hase in Nara.
Getting there
From Kamakura Station, ride the charming Enoden electric railway three stops to Hase Station, then walk five minutes. From Tokyo, the JR Yokosuka Line reaches Kamakura in about an hour. On illumination evenings, expect queues at the gate — the light-up is unique in Kamakura and everybody knows it.
Tips
- Admission is ¥400; the autumn night viewing runs sunset to a 7:00pm gate close, so it's an early-evening event — don't plan a late arrival.
- This is Kamakura's only major foliage light-up and it gets crowded; weeknights are markedly calmer than weekends.
- Climb to the upper terrace for the view over Yuigahama beach — late-afternoon light on the bay, then the illumination after sunset, is the ideal sequence.
- The Great Buddha of Kotoku-in is a ten-minute walk from Hasedera; see it in daylight before the temple's evening viewing.
