Around 550 cherry trees surround Kumamoto Castle's stone ramparts, with the Sakura no Baba Josaien approach area and Ninomaru Square among the most popular viewing spots on the castle grounds.
Background
One of Japan's three great castles, Kumamoto Castle suffered serious damage in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes; restoration has proceeded in stages since, with the main keep reopened to visitors in 2021 while other sections continue to be rebuilt, making a current-season visit partly a chance to watch the restoration itself.

About a 15-minute walk from Kumamotojo/Shiyakusho-mae tram stop (Kumamoto City Tram).
Tips
- Because restoration work is ongoing in places, check the official site for which areas are open before visiting — access has changed section by section since the 2016 earthquake.
- Ninomaru Square, a large open lawn near the castle, is a popular spot for daytime picnics with a clear view of the keep.
- Kumamoto Castle is still under earthquake restoration, so the keep itself is seen from a paid elevated walkway and viewing plaza (特別公開) built for the recovery works, rather than from open castle grounds — factor in that admission if the plan includes the keep.
- Around 550 trees cluster at Sakura-no-Baba and the Ninomaru plaza, both free to walk, with good keep-and-blossom views from the plaza without paying the restoration-viewing fee.
- On weekends in the first three weeks of March (in 2026: Mar 7–22), a separate "Spring Kumamoto Castle Festival" runs alongside the blossoms with samurai-troupe performances and taiko drumming.
