Kumoba Pond is Karuizawa's autumn centerpiece: a small, wind-sheltered pond nicknamed 'Swan Lake' whose still water doubles every maple and larch on its banks into a perfect mirror. Color typically runs from mid-October to early November, earlier than Tokyo thanks to the 1,000-meter elevation. A flat loop path circles the pond in about 25 minutes, making this one of the easiest world-class foliage walks in Japan — and it is free. The reflections are the whole point, so timing and weather matter more than anywhere else.

Background

Karuizawa developed as a highland summer retreat after Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw began spending summers here in the 1880s, and it remains Japan's most famous resort town. Kumoba Pond, fed by spring water, has long been a strolling spot for the villa community on the town's west side.

Getting there

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Karuizawa in about 70 minutes, then walk roughly 20 minutes northwest from the station, or take a short taxi ride. The pond has no dedicated parking lot, so the town explicitly recommends arriving on foot or by public transport — rental bicycles from the station area also work well.
