Oirase is the most beautiful walking stream in Japan — a clear mountain river tumbling out of Lake Towada through 14 kilometers of mossy forest, past a dozen waterfalls, with a flat trail running the entire way. In autumn the beech and maple canopy closes over the water in red and amber; peak color runs mid-October to early November. Entry is free, and because the road shadows the trail, you can walk any section and catch a bus back. On peak weekends private cars are restricted and shuttle buses take over.

Background

The stream is the sole outlet of Lake Towada, a vast volcanic caldera lake, and lies within Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Long protected as a scenic and natural monument, the gorge was famously praised by Meiji-era travel writers and has been a pilgrimage for Japanese landscape painters and photographers ever since.

Getting there

Take the JR Bus Towada-ko line from Aomori Station or Hachinohe Station (Shinkansen stops) toward Lake Towada; it stops at trailheads along the stream, including Ishigedo and Nenokuchi. On peak foliage weekends, private car access is restricted and shuttle buses operate instead — plan around the bus timetable, which thins out late afternoon.

Tips

• Walk the upstream half from Ishigedo to Nenokuchi (about 9 km, 3 hours) — it packs in the best waterfalls, including Choshi Otaki.
• Entry is free; your only costs are the bus fare, so budget time rather than money.
• Overcast days are actually ideal here — soft light suits the mossy stream far better than harsh midday sun, and morning mist is a bonus.
• Finish at Nenokuchi and add a Lake Towada sightseeing cruise, then soak at Towadako Onsen or continue to Tsuta Onsen's famous beech-forest bath.
