A 2km canal-side footpath in northern Kyoto, the Philosopher's Path is lined with roughly 400 cherry trees, many descended from trees donated by painter Hashimoto Kansetsu, connecting Ginkaku-ji to Nanzen-ji through a tunnel of blossoms over the water.

Background

Named for philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who is said to have walked this canal-side route while meditating, the path has become one of Kyoto's signature spring walks, threading past several smaller temples between its two famous endpoints.
