The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the Northern Alps between Toyama and Nagano by cable car, highland bus, trolley bus, and ropeway, topping out at 2,450-meter Murodo. Its 1,975 meters of elevation range means autumn lasts six weeks: color starts at Murodo in mid-September and rolls downhill to Bijodaira and Ogizawa by late October, with the ropeway over Kurobe Lake as the centerpiece. On clear days you get the rare three-layer view — snow on the peaks, red mid-slopes, green valleys below.

Background

Tateyama is one of Japan's three sacred mountains, climbed by pilgrims for over a millennium. The modern route grew out of the heroic construction of Kurobe Dam, completed in 1963, and opened as a through sightseeing corridor in 1971.

Getting there

Enter from Toyama via the Toyama Chiho Railway to Tateyama Station, or from the Nagano side via bus from Shinano-Omachi to Ogizawa. Most travelers traverse the whole route one way, sending luggage ahead. Note the full crossing costs over ¥10,000 and the entire route shuts down for winter at the end of November.
