The Toyama Shinko fireworks turn an industrial port into a stage: about 3,000 shells over the harbor with the full-rigged sail training ship Kaiwomaru and the illuminated Shinminato Bridge in frame, plus underwater starmines that bloom directly on the water. Small by national standards, but the setting is one of a kind.
Background
Held since the 1960s as the port area's summer festival, it embraced its backdrop — the preserved four-masted 'Lady of the Sea' moored at Kaiwomaru Park — as the show's identity.
Getting there
The venue is Kaiwomaru Park in Imizu: about 10 minutes on foot from Kaiwomaru Station on the Manyosen tram line (about 45 minutes from Takaoka), or 30 minutes by car from Toyama City.
Tips
- The classic composition — bursts behind the tall ship's rigging — is from the park's west lawn; photographers stake it out by afternoon.
- The underwater starmines fire close to the quay; front-row space along the water goes first.
- The Manyosen is a charming but tiny tram — allow patience after the finale or arrange a car.
- Pair it with the Shinminato fish market's kaisendon lunch and a Kaiwomaru deck tour before the evening show.
