Yabakei in northern Kyushu is a landscape of sheer volcanic rock towers rising from forested valleys, and its centerpiece viewpoint, Hitome Hakkei — "eight views in one glance" — delivers exactly that: eight named crags visible from a single observation deck in Shin-Yabakei. The gorge colors early for the region, peaking from early to mid-November, when the maples burn against gray stone. It's free, uncrowded by Honshu standards, and firmly rental-car territory, with a free 256-space parking lot at the main viewpoint.

Background

Yabakei's most famous feature is the Ao no Domon, a 342-meter tunnel that the monk Zenkai carved through a cliff largely by hand over three decades in the mid-1700s to spare travelers a deadly chain-and-plank path. The area became part of a prefectural natural park celebrated in Edo-period travel writing.

Getting there

There is no rail line into the gorge: rent a car in Nakatsu (about 30-40 minutes to Hitome Hakkei) or at Fukuoka Airport (roughly 90 minutes). Infrequent local buses run from JR Nakatsu Station toward Yabakei and Shin-Yabakei, but schedules are thin — check return times carefully or stick with the car.

Tips

• November weekends jam the valley road below Hitome Hakkei by late morning — arrive before 9am to walk straight onto the observation deck.
• Viewing is free and the 256-space lot at Hitome Hakkei costs nothing; food stalls around the deck sell yakimochi and local soba in season.
• Morning light hits the east-facing crags at Hitome Hakkei best; the "hisashi momiji" maple corridor in Shin-Yabakei is a worthy second stop by car.
• Pair the gorge with Rakanji temple, reached by chairlift past cliff-carved Buddhist grottoes, and the Ao no Domon tunnel — all within a 15-minute drive.
