The Iya Valley and neighboring Oboke Gorge cut through the deepest mountains of Shikoku, and their staggered seasons stretch foliage viewing from late October to late November — Iya's high slopes turn first (late October to mid-November), the Oboke river cliffs last (mid- to late November). Between crossing the swaying kazura vine bridge, riding a sightseeing boat beneath Oboke's marbled cliffs, and finding the cliff-edge Peeing Boy statue, this is Japan's best-known "hidden region" — with the winding roads to prove it.

Background

The valley's fame as a hideout dates to 1185, when survivors of the defeated Heike (Taira) clan reputedly fled here after the Genpei War; the vine bridges are said to descend from crossings they could cut loose behind them. The Nishi-Iya kazura bridge is rebuilt with fresh vines every three years.

Getting there

This is car country: roads are narrow and buses sparse. The rail gateway is JR Oboke Station on the Dosan Line (about 90 minutes from Takamatsu or Okayama via Awa-Ikeda). Limited local buses run from Oboke and Awa-Ikeda to the kazura bridge, but a rental car — or a bus tour from Awa-Ikeda — is far more practical.
