Kochi Park, home to one of Japan's twelve surviving original castle keeps, holds around 180 cherry trees of five varieties spread across a compact, walkable hilltop site overlooking central Kochi city.
Background
Kochi Castle was completed in 1611 for the Yamauchi clan and is one of only a handful of Japanese castles retaining both its original keep and its palace-style honmaru gate, giving the hilltop a rare combination of authentic Edo-era architecture and cherry blossoms.
Getting there
About a 25-minute walk from JR Kochi Station, or a 5-minute walk from Kochijomae Station on the Tosaden Kochi city tram.
Tips
- Being smaller than the major Honshu castle parks, it's an easy 1-2 hour visit rather than a half-day outing — pair it with central Kochi's covered arcades and Sunday market.
- Paper lanterns (bonbori) are lit in the evenings during peak bloom for a quieter, less touristed night-viewing option than Japan's bigger-name yozakura spots.
- The 180 trees here are an unusually mixed planting — yamazakura, oshimazakura, someiyoshino and more — so the bloom is more staggered than a single-variety park, and something is usually still out even a few days off peak.
- The "Kochi Castle Flower Corridor" night event (in 2026: Apr 3–5, 6:00pm–9:00pm) is free to walk through; only climbing the keep and visiting the Kaitokukan hall cost separate admission.
- Kochi Castle is one of the few in Japan with its original wooden keep and Edo-period palace both intact, so the paid areas are worth the extra ticket if the visit isn't only about the blossoms.
