The Kagoshima Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks launches about 15,000 shells over the bay with the active volcano Sakurajima smoking in the background — including paired two-shaku shells bursting simultaneously over the water, Kyushu's largest. Volcano, bay, and fire: no other Japanese fireworks festival has this stage.
Background
Started in 2000 to celebrate the city's port heritage, it quickly became Kyushu's largest single-night fireworks event, built around the bay's natural amphitheater between the city and the volcano.
Getting there
The venue is the North Pier area of Kagoshima Port, about 15 minutes by tram plus a short walk from JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station (Kyushu Shinkansen terminus), or 10 minutes on foot from the Suizokukan-guchi tram stop.
Tips
- The Sakurajima silhouette behind the bursts is the photo — the waterfront park north of the aquarium lines it up best.
- Late-August humidity plus 200,000 people: hydration and an early arrival (by 5pm for free areas) are essential.
- The twin two-shaku simultaneous burst near the finale is the signature moment.
- Trams after the show overflow; the 30-minute walk back to Tenmonkan's bars is genuinely the better option.
