Kamikochi is Japan's most celebrated alpine valley, a flat riverside basin at 1,500 meters ringed by the 3,000-meter peaks of the Hotaka range. In autumn the valley turns gold rather than red — first the broadleaf trees from early October, then the famous larch forests in mid-to-late October, glowing yellow against the first snow on the summits. The walk from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge along the impossibly clear Azusa River is one of the great easy hikes in Japan. Entry is free.

Background

Kamikochi was introduced to the wider world in the late 19th century by British missionary Walter Weston, whose advocacy helped launch modern mountaineering in Japan. The valley is now strictly protected as part of Chubusangaku National Park, with private cars banned to preserve it.

Getting there

Private cars are banned year-round. From Matsumoto, take the Alpico line to Shin-Shimashima and a bus into the valley; drivers must park at Sawando (Nagano side) or Hirayu (Gifu side) and ride the shuttle bus in. Direct buses also run from Matsumoto and Takayama. The valley closes for winter on November 15.
