Kitano Tenmangu is famous for plum blossoms, but each autumn it opens the Odoi Momiji-en — a maple garden of about 350 trees planted along the ruins of the Odoi, the earthen rampart Toyotomi Hideyoshi built around Kyoto in 1591. Paths run both on top of the embankment and along the stream below it, so you view the same maples from above and beneath. The garden opens from November 1 to early December, peaking mid-November onward, with evening illumination from sunset to 8:00pm (entry until 7:40pm).
Background
Founded in 947, Kitano Tenmangu is the head shrine of roughly 12,000 Tenjin shrines nationwide, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the 9th-century scholar-statesman deified as the god of learning. The current main sanctuary, built by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1607, is a National Treasure.
Getting there
From Kyoto Station, City Bus 50 or 101 runs directly to the Kitano Tenmangu-mae stop in about 30-35 minutes, dropping you at the shrine's front approach. By rail, the Randen tram's Kitano-Hakubaicho terminus is a 5-minute walk from the west side of the grounds.
Tips
- Momiji-en admission is ¥1,200 and includes a tea-and-sweet set served in the garden — take the break at the teahouse midway rather than rushing through.
- The shrine grounds themselves are free; only the maple garden is ticketed, so budget travelers can still see the National Treasure buildings and the approach for nothing.
- The 25th of each month is Tenjin-san market day — hundreds of flea-market stalls fill the grounds; November 25 combines foliage and market but is the single busiest day of the season.
- Crowds here are far thinner than at Tofuku-ji or Kiyomizu — this is a good peak-weekend choice, and it pairs well with the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), 10 minutes away by bus 204/205 or taxi.
