The Matsuyama Port Festival's Mitsuhama fireworks are Shikoku's largest — about 8,000 shells over the old port district's waters, closing the castle city's summer. Expect wide bay-launched starmines and a relaxed, regional crowd a world away from the Honshu mega-festivals.
Background
The port festival has been Matsuyama's maritime summer celebration for over 70 years, held at Mitsuhama, the historic harbor that served the castle town before the modern port.
Getting there
The venue is the Mitsu pier area, about 10 minutes on foot from Mitsu Station (Iyotetsu Takahama Line, 20 minutes from Matsuyama City Station).
Tips
- The Iyotetsu line is small — extra trains run, but expect queues; some locals walk back to Furumachi (about 40 minutes) instead.
- Combine with Dogo Onsen: soak in Japan's oldest bathhouse in the afternoon, train across town for the evening show.
- The first Saturday of August overlaps with other Setouchi events — Matsuyama hotels fill, but not brutally; a few weeks' notice suffices.
