On the four biggest weekend days of the season, entry between 10:00am and 4:00pm needs an online reservation. Walk-in still works before 10:00am and after 4:00pm, and on all other days.
Shinjuku Gyoen's roughly 900 cherry trees span about 70 varieties, with early-blooming kanzakura in February and late-blooming yaezakura still flowering into late April, giving Tokyo's most botanically diverse hanami season.
Background
Developed from an Edo-era feudal lord's estate into an Imperial garden and then a public national garden after WWII, Shinjuku Gyoen blends French formal, English landscape and traditional Japanese garden styles in one park, with cherry trees planted across all three sections.
Getting there
About a 5-minute walk from Shinjuku-gyoenmae Station (Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line) or Sendagaya Station (JR Chuo-Sobu Line).
Tips
- Because the roughly 70 varieties bloom in sequence from February to late April, this is one of the few Tokyo hanami spots with a realistic backup plan if you miss peak Someiyoshino week.
- Alcohol is banned and the atmosphere is quieter than Ueno — it's a picnic-and-stroll park rather than a party spot, with a small admission fee that keeps crowds more manageable.
- Alcohol, tents and parasols are all banned inside the garden, and staying on one patch of lawn for a long time is asked against too — this is a walk-and-look garden, not a party spot.
- On the four biggest weekend days of the season (in 2026: Mar 28–29 and Apr 4–5, 10:00am–4:00pm) entry needs an online reservation in advance. Same-day walk-in still works before 10:00am and after 4:00pm on those dates, and children, disability card holders and annual passholders are exempt.
- Admission is ¥500 for adults, ¥250 for seniors and students, and free for children — but free for everyone on Apr 29, May 4 and May 5.
- The garden closes at 6:00pm (last entry 5:30pm) even during the cherry blossom special-opening weeks, so there is no evening or night viewing here — plan the visit for daytime.
