The Tokyo Marathon is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, run through central Tokyo on a Sunday in early March. The course starts below the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and passes Iidabashi, Akihabara, Nihonbashi, Asakusa, Monzen-Nakacho, Ginza and Shiba before finishing at Wadakura Gate by Tokyo Station. For visitors who are not running, it is a free street event: the whole city comes out to cheer along the route.
Background
The 2027 race marks the event's 20th anniversary and doubles as a selection race for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Japan Association of Athletics Federations.
Getting there
Start: Tochomae Station (Toei Oedo Line) or a 10 min walk from the west side of Shinjuku Station. Finish: Wadakura Gate, a short walk from the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station. Roads along the course are closed and heavily congested on race day, so move around by subway.

Tips
- The 2027 race starts at 9:10 AM (wheelchair races at 9:05 AM). The official course map lists expected passing times, so you can plan where to cheer.
- The course is full of out-and-back stretches: it turns at Ueno-Hirokoji (km 10.6), near Asakusa (around km 18), at Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine (km 24) and at Tamachi (km 37.5), so the streets near those turns see runners pass in both directions.
- Entry is by lottery and the 2027 general-entry draw has already closed (results were announced on September 11, 2026). Charity entry and official tour packages are the remaining routes for overseas runners.
