Ueno Park's central promenade, lined with roughly 1,200 cherry trees, has been one of Tokyo's most crowded and traditional hanami spots since the Edo period, with tarps claimed for daytime picnics from early morning.

Background

Cherry trees were first planted here in the 1600s by a Buddhist monk who wanted ordinary residents, not just the aristocracy, to have a great blossom-viewing spot near the capital, and the park has stayed Tokyo's most famous public hanami ground ever since.

Getting there

Directly connected to JR Ueno Station's park exit, or Ueno Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya lines.

Tips

• The central promenade gets extremely crowded on weekend afternoons; the surrounding Shinobazu Pond area is a quieter alternative with its own cherry trees.
• Food stalls line the main path during peak bloom, making it one of the few sakura spots where a proper hanami picnic is easy without bringing your own supplies.
• Ueno is one of the few places in Tokyo where a sit-down hanami party is still allowed — but only until the lanterns go out around 8:00pm.
• Not on the main Sakura-dori avenue, though: there the park runs a walk-through policy and asks groups not to spread sheets. The sitting spots are on the lawns off the avenue.
• Fire, tables and chairs, cooking equipment, instruments and karaoke are all prohibited, so this is a bento-and-blanket affair rather than a barbecue.
• The park is closed to entry between 11:00pm and 5:00am, so there is no all-night viewing here.
