Fukuroda Falls is one of Japan's three most celebrated waterfalls — a broad curtain of water sliding down a four-tiered rock face 120 meters tall — and in autumn the cliffs around it ignite in red and gold. Peak color runs early to mid-November. You view the falls head-on from platforms reached through a tunnel bored into the mountain. From November through mid-January the 'Daigo Light' illumination bathes the entire waterfall in colored light nightly from sunset to 8:00pm, one of the few large-scale waterfall light-ups in Japan.
Background
The falls have drawn admirers for centuries; the poet-monk Saigyo is said to have declared that one must see Fukuroda in all four seasons to appreciate it fully. The name of the surrounding town, Daigo, survives in the modern illumination's punning title, Daigo Light.
Getting there
From Mito (JR Joban Line from Tokyo), take the JR Suigun Line about 70 minutes to Fukuroda Station, then a town bus or taxi 10 minutes — or walk about 40 minutes — to the falls entrance. Trains on the rural Suigun Line are infrequent, so check the timetable both ways.
Tips
- The observation tunnel costs ¥300 for adults — it's the only way to the main viewing decks and worth every yen.
- Come twice in one visit if you can: daylight for the foliage, then stay past sunset for the Daigo Light illumination (November to mid-January, until 8:00pm).
- Morning visits catch spray-lit rainbows when the sun angles into the gorge; afternoons flatten the falls into shade.
- In deep winter the falls partially freeze into a wall of ice — if you miss the leaves, the frozen-falls season is a legitimate consolation trip.
