The Onmaku fireworks close Imabari's citizens' festival with about 10,000 music-synchronized shells over the port — a serious show for a mid-sized city, thanks to the festival's reputation for one of Shikoku's best-produced pyromusical programs.
Background
Onmaku ('offering curtain' in the local dialect) began in 1998, merging Imabari's older festivals into a two-day dance-and-fireworks format, with the finale night as the Shimanami area's biggest fireworks event.
Getting there
The venue is Imabari Port, about 15 minutes on foot from JR Imabari Station (Yosan Line; about 40 minutes from Matsuyama by limited express).
Tips
- The music synchronization is the point — get within speaker range of the port plaza rather than watching from distant shores.
- Cyclists on the Shimanami Kaido can time their crossing to end in Imabari on festival night — the best finish line in Japan.
- Rain shifts it two days later rather than cancelling.
- Imabari's hotel stock is modest; Matsuyama is a practical base with late trains back.
