Kobe Christmas Market is held at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden, about 400 m up Mt. Rokko and reached by ropeway from Shin-Kobe. The observation plaza, built to look like a medieval European castle, is decorated for a 'Botanical Christmas', with a 25 m metasequoia tree, German crafts and mulled wine from the Pfalz region, above a night view of Kobe.

Background

The market sells German crafts — nutcrackers, smokers, cuckoo clocks, Christmas pyramids and schwibbogen — alongside a 'Beer & Wine Fest'. It overlaps with the garden's autumn-leaf light-up: the metasequoias turn colour from mid-November to early December.

Getting there

About 5 min walk from Shin-Kobe Station (Kobe Municipal Subway / Sanyo Shinkansen) to the ropeway base station. The mountaintop garden is not accessible by car; after 17:30 access is by ropeway only.

Tips

• The Christmas-season ticket (ropeway round trip plus garden entry) is ¥3,300 for adults and ¥1,650 for children. Buy online to skip the ticket queue.
• Market hours: weekdays 10:30 AM–4:30 PM; Fridays to Sundays, holidays and every day December 11–28, 10:30 AM–8:00 PM (ropeway until 9:00 PM).
• To see the night view, come on a Friday-to-Sunday evening or after December 11 — on weekdays the market closes at 4:30 PM.
• The garden can't be reached by car. After 5:30 PM the ropeway is the only way up.
