Kobe Luminarie fills the plaza at Higashi Yuenchi and the arcades of the former foreign settlement with towering arches of light, built from hundreds of thousands of small bulbs into cathedral-like structures you walk straight through.
Background
The display began in December 1995, months after the Great Hanshin earthquake, as a memorial for the victims and a symbol of the city's recovery. It has run almost every winter since, making it one of Japan's oldest and most emotionally significant illumination events rather than a purely commercial decoration.
Getting there
Higashi Yuenchi is a 5-minute walk from JR Motomachi Station or Kobe Municipal Subway Sannomiya Station. The light corridor runs from there toward Motomachi and Meriken Park.
Tips
- The route is one-way and can back up into a slow-moving queue on weekend evenings — a weekday visit or an early arrival avoids the worst of it.
- A paid viewing area near the final arch (nicknamed Kobe's 'Duomo') offers a less crowded, unobstructed view for a small fee.
- Pair the walk with dinner in nearby Chinatown (Nankinmachi), a 10-minute walk from the settlement district.
