Minoo Park is Osaka's escape hatch: a forested river gorge just 30 minutes from Umeda, ending at a 33-meter waterfall framed in maples. The walk from Hankyu Minoo Station to the falls takes about 40 minutes along a paved, mostly gentle path lined with food stalls selling momiji tempura — actual maple leaves battered and fried, the local specialty. Color peaks from mid-November to early December, arriving latest around the falls themselves, and entry is completely free.

Background

The valley has been sacred ground since the seventh century, when the ascetic En no Gyoja is said to have trained at the waterfall and founded Ryuanji temple partway up the trail. In 1967 the forest was designated the Meiji no Mori Minoo Quasi-National Park, marking the Meiji era's centennial.

Getting there

Take the Hankyu Takarazuka Line from Osaka-Umeda and change at Ishibashi Handai-mae to the Minoo branch line — about 30 minutes total to Minoo Station. The trail starts right outside. There is no parking inside the park and cars cannot enter, so trains are effectively the only way in.
