For one week each mid-April, the Japan Mint's Osaka grounds open to the public for the Sakura-no-Tourinuke ('cherry blossom walk-through'), a 560m one-way route past roughly 340 trees of about 140 mostly late-blooming double-flowered (yaezakura) varieties not commonly seen elsewhere.
Background
The walk-through tradition dates to 1883, when the Mint's director opened the grounds to the public who had been admiring the trees from outside the fence; it has continued nearly every year since as a one-way, foot-traffic-only route rather than a park to linger in.
Getting there
About a 15-minute walk from JR Osaka Station or Osaka Business Park Station (Osaka Metro Nagahoribashi Line).
Tips
- Because this is a one-way walking route through working government grounds, not a park, there's no picnicking — it's a look-and-move-on experience, typically 30-45 minutes end to end.
- The dates are fixed to a specific week around mid-April chosen for the late-blooming yaezakura, roughly two to three weeks after Osaka's main Someiyoshino peak, so it's a good second stop for a longer Kansai trip.
- Entry is free, but you have to apply online in advance and show a QR code at the gate — there is no walk-up admission, and it is what catches first-time visitors out.
- Hours are 10:00am–7:15pm on weekdays and 9:00am–7:15pm at weekends, with everyone asked to be out by 7:45pm. The late close means the last hour is after dark.
- It is a one-way pass-through rather than a picnic spot: eating and drinking inside is asked against, and parasols, selfie sticks and tripods are not allowed.
- The 331 trees cover about 140 varieties, most of them late double-flowered sakura — which is why this runs a week or two after Osaka's somei-yoshino have already dropped.
