Nago Castle Ruins Park is lined with Kanhizakura (Taiwan cherry), a deep-pink, bell-shaped variety that blooms in January, weeks before anywhere else in Japan, making this one of the first places in the country to see cherry blossoms each year.

Background

The Nago Sakura Matsuri, held here since the 1960s, is timed each year to the Kanhizakura's early bloom and has become a fixture marking the symbolic start of Japan's cherry blossom season nationwide, months before the mainland's Someiyoshino displays.

Getting there

About a 15-minute walk uphill from central Nago; a shuttle bus typically runs during the sakura matsuri weekend.

Tips

• Kanhizakura flowers hang bell-like and don't fully open flat the way Someiyoshino does — expect a visually different bloom than mainland cherry blossoms, not just an earlier one.
• Because this is Japan's earliest bloom, it's a realistic add-on to a winter Okinawa trip rather than requiring a dedicated spring visit.
• These are kanhizakura (寒緋桜), a deep pink, bell-shaped flower that blooms nothing like the pale someiyoshino most visitors picture — and it opens in late January to mid-February, making Nago Okinawa's earliest cherry blossom spot and one of the earliest in Japan.
• The 2026 festival runs a single weekend, Jan 31–Feb 1, with the roughly 2km path through the park lit by paper lanterns at night; outside that weekend the trees still bloom on their own schedule but without festival infrastructure.
• Entry is free, and the festival adds Eisa dance performances and a parade through central Nago alongside the flower viewing.
