Southeast Botanical Gardens wraps its tropical palm groves and lily ponds in warm-colored lights for Okinawa's longest-running illumination, giving the display a distinctly subtropical look rather than the pine-and-snow theme common on the mainland.
Background
Now running for well over a decade, the display has become Okinawa's best-known illumination, expanding each season and drawing repeat visitors specifically for its palm-tree-and-lily-pond setting, unusual for a Japanese winter illumination.
Getting there
About a 20-minute drive from the Okinawa Kita interchange on the Okinawa Expressway; a shuttle bus also runs from Okinawa City on selected dates.
Tips
- The season is unusually long for an illumination, running from October to the following May, so it overlaps Okinawa's cherry blossom season (Japan's earliest, from January) at the end.
- The garden's lily pond reflection is the signature photo spot — calm evenings with no wind give the sharpest reflection.
- The 2026–27 Okinawa Nangoku Illumination runs October 23, 2026 to May 23, 2027, lit 5:00–10:00 PM (last entry 9:30 PM).
