Nara Park is the only place in Japan where you can photograph wild deer wandering beneath red maples — and it costs nothing to enter. The park's 1,600 acres turn color in waves: Chinese tallow trees and ginkgo go gold from late October, while the maples peak from mid-November to early December, giving you one of the longest foliage windows in Kansai. The deer, the lanterns of Kasuga Taisha, and the great roof of Todai-ji all sit inside the color zone.

Background

The park was formally established in 1880 on land long held by Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha, temples and shrines dating to Nara's eighth-century run as Japan's capital. The deer have been protected for centuries as sacred messengers of the Kasuga deity, and today number over a thousand.

Getting there

From Kintetsu Nara Station, the park begins about a 5-minute walk east; from JR Nara Station it's 15-20 minutes on foot or a short ride on the loop bus. Kintetsu is the faster approach from Osaka (about 40 minutes from Namba) and Kyoto (about 45 minutes).
