Tanzan Shrine hides in the mountains of Sakurai with roughly 3,000 maples surrounding the only thirteen-story wooden pagoda in the world — an image that looks lifted from an ink painting when the leaves turn. Peak color runs from mid-November to early December, and the shrine stages an evening illumination in the same window (in 2025 it ran November 14 to December 7, 5:00-8:30pm, last entry 8:00pm). The remoteness keeps crowds far thinner than Nara Park.

Background

The shrine venerates Fujiwara no Kamatari, the seventh-century statesman who plotted the Taika political reforms here in a secret hillside meeting in 645 — the name Tanzan means "conversation mountain." The current thirteen-story pagoda, rebuilt in 1532, is the only surviving wooden structure of its kind.

Getting there

This is a mountain shrine: take the Kintetsu Osaka Line or JR to Sakurai Station, then a Nara Kotsu bus about 25 minutes to the Tanzan Jinja stop, followed by a short uphill walk. Buses are infrequent — check the return timetable on arrival — and many visitors come by rental car or taxi.

Tips

• Admission is 600 yen; the illumination period is the one time of year the pagoda glows against black mountainside, worth timing your visit around.
• Bus service thins out after dark — if you stay for the light-up, confirm the last bus back to Sakurai or arrange a taxi in advance.
• The classic photo is the pagoda framed by maples from the west-side stairway; shoot mid-afternoon when sun hits the vermilion halls.
• Combine with the Yamanobe-no-michi walking trail or Hasedera temple, also in Sakurai, for a full day in Nara's quiet southeast.
