Roughly 30,000 cherry trees, overwhelmingly wild Shirayama-zakura, cover Mt. Yoshino's slopes in four named tiers — Shimo-Senbon, Naka-Senbon, Kami-Senbon and Oku-Senbon — with bloom sweeping upward from the lowest tier to the highest over about a month.
Background
Cherry trees have been planted on this sacred mountain for over a thousand years as offerings to the mountain's Shugendo Buddhist deity, rather than for ornamental viewing, making Yoshino's scale the accidental byproduct of a religious practice rather than a garden design.
Getting there
About a 5-minute walk from Yoshino Station (Kintetsu Yoshino Line) to the ropeway up to the Shimo-Senbon area; the upper tiers require further walking or a bus.

- Because bloom sweeps from the lowest tier (Shimo-Senbon) to the highest (Oku-Senbon) over roughly a month, timing which tier to visit matters more here than at almost any other Japanese sakura spot.
- The mountain is steep and the walk between tiers substantial — comfortable walking shoes matter more here than at flatter castle-park spots.
- Yoshino is not one viewing spot but four, stacked up the mountain by elevation — Shimosenbon, Nakasenbon, Kamisenbon and Okusenbon — and they bloom in that order about a week apart, so the season here runs roughly a month rather than the usual week or two. In 2026 the forecast peaks were Apr 3 (Shimosenbon), Apr 4 (Nakasenbon), Apr 7 (Kamisenbon) and Apr 12 (Okusenbon); check which tier is at its best before you go rather than assuming the whole mountain peaks together.
