Koyasan Autumn Leaves (Mount Koya) 2026 Confirmed

- Typical peak
- Oct 25 – Tue, November 10, 2026
- Venue
- Kongobuji Temple area, Koyasan

Koyasan, the World Heritage monastery town on an 800-meter mountaintop, turns color earlier than anywhere else in the Kansai region — late October to about November 10, a full two to three weeks before Kyoto. That altitude quirk makes it the smart first stop on an autumn itinerary. The maple tunnel along the Jabara-michi path near Kongobuji and the cedar-shadowed approach to Okunoin cemetery are the showpieces, best experienced by staying overnight in a shukubo temple lodging.
Background
The monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) founded Koyasan in 816 as the headquarters of Shingon esoteric Buddhism, and the faithful believe he remains in eternal meditation at Okunoin. The complex of 117 temples was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
Getting there
From Osaka's Namba Station, take the Nankai Koya Line about 90 minutes to Gokurakubashi, then the 5-minute cable car up to Koyasan Station; buses connect the station to the town center (walking that road is prohibited). The Nankai Koyasan World Heritage Ticket bundles the round trip and buses at a discount.
Tips
- Book a shukubo (temple lodging) months ahead for foliage season — dinner is elegant Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, and morning prayers are open to guests.
- Walking the town is free; Kongobuji and other halls charge modest individual admissions of a few hundred yen each.
- Go to Okunoin at dawn or after dark with the stone lanterns lit — the day-trip crowds arrive around 10am and leave by 4pm.
- Pack a warm layer even in October: at 800 meters, mornings and evenings run 5-8 degrees Celsius colder than Osaka.
