Koyasan, the World Heritage monastery town on an 800-meter mountaintop, turns color earlier than anywhere else in the Kansai region — late October to about November 10, a full two to three weeks before Kyoto. That altitude quirk makes it the smart first stop on an autumn itinerary. The maple tunnel along the Jabara-michi path near Kongobuji and the cedar-shadowed approach to Okunoin cemetery are the showpieces, best experienced by staying overnight in a shukubo temple lodging.

Background

The monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) founded Koyasan in 816 as the headquarters of Shingon esoteric Buddhism, and the faithful believe he remains in eternal meditation at Okunoin. The complex of 117 temples was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
