Naruko Gorge is Tohoku's poster autumn view: a ravine roughly 100 meters deep, its sheer walls covered edge-to-edge in red, orange, and gold, with the arched Ofukazawa Bridge framed against the color. Peak season runs late October to early November. The classic shot — a train emerging from a tunnel into the painted gorge on the Rikuu East Line — draws photographers from across Japan. The walking path along the gorge floor is open 9:00am to 4:00pm, and the neighboring Naruko Onsen hot-spring town makes an easy base.

Background

The gorge was carved by the Okura River through volcanic rock in the Naruko hot-spring region, an onsen area documented for centuries and famed as the birthplace of kokeshi — the cylindrical painted wooden dolls still handmade in local workshops today.

Getting there

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Furukawa, transfer to the JR Rikuu East Line, and ride about 45 minutes to Naruko-Onsen Station; the main viewpoint is a 30-minute walk or short taxi ride. In peak season, roads and parking around the gorge jam badly — the train is genuinely the better option.

Tips

• The gorge-floor walking trail closes at 4:00pm — arrive by early afternoon if you want to hike it rather than just view from above.
• Check the Rikuu East Line timetable in advance if you want the famous train-crossing-the-gorge photo from the Ofukazawa Bridge viewpoint; trains are infrequent.
• Skip driving on peak weekends — parking lots and the access road are notorious for hours-long backups.
• Combine with a soak in Naruko Onsen, whose sulfur-rich waters are among Tohoku's best, and pick up a hand-painted kokeshi doll from a workshop in town.
