Todoroki is the only true ravine inside Tokyo's 23 wards: about a kilometre of the Yazawa stream running some ten metres below street level, with a walkway threading under maples, bamboo and zelkova. The temperature drops noticeably as you go down the steps, and the traffic noise stops. The best colour is on the terrace of Todoroki Fudoson, the temple above the valley, looking down into the ravine. There is no admission charge. Peak is late November into early December.
Background
The valley is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty of Tokyo. Todoroki Fudoson, formally a hall of Manganji temple, is traditionally attributed to the Heian-period monk Kogyo Daishi, and the small Fudo waterfall below it was long used for cold-water ascetic practice. Burial chambers cut into the valley wall in the 3rd to 4th centuries survive at the downstream end, a reminder that this cut in the Musashino terrace has been used for far longer than the city above it.
Getting there
Todoroki Station on the Tokyu Oimachi Line is a three-minute walk from the Golf-bashi entrance, which is immediately beside the railway. The Oimachi Line connects to Jiyugaoka for the Toyoko Line and to Ooimachi for the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line.
Tips
- Free, with no gate and no opening hours — but the walkway is unlit, so this is a daylight visit.
- Sections of the walkway have been closed for safety work in recent years; check the Setagaya ward page before making a special trip.
- The Fudoson terrace teahouse above the valley has the view down into the maples, and is the one spot worth queuing for.
- Kuhonbutsu Joshinji, two stations away on the same line, is a major maple temple in its own right and makes this a half-day rather than a half-hour.
