About 1,000 cherry trees frame Himeji Castle, Japan's best-preserved original castle keep and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the white 'Egret Castle' rising above the blossoms in Nishinomaru Garden and the surrounding moat.
Background
The current keep dates to 1609 and survived WWII bombing raids and centuries of earthquakes largely intact, making it Japan's most complete surviving feudal castle; the cherry blossoms are a seasonal addition to a site whose main draw is the architecture itself.
Getting there
About a 15-minute walk straight up the main approach from JR Himeji Station or Sanyo Himeji Station.
Tips
- Nishinomaru Garden, inside the castle grounds, has the densest concentration of cherry trees and requires the separate castle admission ticket.
- The moat-side path outside the paid castle grounds is free and gives a classic reflection shot of the keep through the blossoms.
- The night cherry blossom event is held in the Nishi-no-maru Garden, at the base of the castle with the keep as a backdrop — it is not an evening opening of the main keep itself, and the ¥600 night ticket is separate from daytime admission.
- A free daytime viewing event (観桜会) runs on a single Saturday in late March, 10:00am–4:00pm, in the San-no-maru plaza in front of the castle, with a rain date the following day.
- Local food stalls at the festival sell Himeji specialties rather than generic festival food — Himeji oden (eaten with a ginger-soy dip instead of the usual sauce), Senhime bento and local sake among them.
