Koko-en is nine connected Edo-style walled gardens sitting literally in the shadow of Himeji Castle — and at 310 yen, one of the best-value foliage tickets in Japan. Maples arch over koi ponds and a tea house, peaking from mid-November to early December. During the annual Momiji-kai illumination (in 2025, November 21 to December 7), hours extend to 8:00pm with lights coming on around 5:00pm sunset, letting you pair a castle afternoon with an evening of lit maples reflected in still water.

Background

The garden opened in 1992 to mark the centennial of Himeji's incorporation as a city, built on the excavated site of the feudal lord's west residence and samurai quarters. Its nine walled sections trace the actual plot lines of those Edo-period residences, uncovered during archaeological digs.

Getting there

Koko-en sits next to Himeji Castle: from JR Himeji Station (under an hour from Osaka by special rapid train, or 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka by shinkansen), walk 15 minutes straight up Otemae-dori, or take any castle-bound loop bus to the Himeji-jo Otemon-mae stop.

Tips

• Admission is just 310 yen; a combination ticket with Himeji Castle saves a little more and makes the pairing a no-brainer.
• Do the castle first (it closes earlier), then walk into Koko-en at dusk during the illumination for lit maples with zero backtracking.
• The pond garden nearest the entrance gives the classic shot of maples doubled in dark water — steadiest reflections come on windless evenings.
• The Souju-an tea house serves matcha in the garden for a small fee; it's far calmer than any tea room in Kyoto in November.
