Around 400 cherry trees line the grounds of Inuyama Castle, Japan's oldest surviving original keep, and the Kiso River bank just below it, with the white castle tower rising above the pink blossoms.
Background
Built in the 1440s and rebuilt in its current form in the 1600s, Inuyama Castle is one of only twelve Japanese castles with a keep dating from the feudal era, and one of five designated National Treasures among them.

About a 15-minute walk from Inuyama-Yuen Station (Meitetsu Inuyama Line).
Tips
- The castle keep is lit nightly year-round from dusk to around 22:00, so the illuminated tower-and-blossoms combination is available on ordinary evenings, not just a special event.
- The Kiso River bank just below the castle gives a wider, less crowded view than the immediate castle grounds.
- The riverside promenade along the Kiso River is free and has two paths — one along the bank, one up on the levee — both giving a view of the castle above the blossoms. Only climbing the keep itself costs anything: ¥550 for adults, ¥110 for elementary/junior-high age.
- A river cruise boat runs during the season for a view of the castle and blossoms from the water — it is a separate paid extra, not included with the castle ticket.
