The Nagoya Basho is the summer tournament of grand sumo: 15 days each July at IG Arena, the new arena in Meijo Park just north of Nagoya Castle. Every rank competes each day, from the youngest wrestlers in the morning to the ozeki and yokozuna in the late afternoon. The move to the new arena brought larger box seats, and it is the only tournament in the Chubu region.
Background
Grand sumo holds six official tournaments a year, each lasting 15 days: three in Tokyo (January, May, September) and one each in Osaka (March), Nagoya (July) and Fukuoka (November). The Japan Sumo Association sets the dates years in advance. The Nagoya tournament moved to IG Arena when the arena opened, and the Association enlarged the box seats there — a four-person box is about 140 cm square.
Getting there
Right by Exit 4 of Meijo Koen Station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijo Line. When the station is crowded, the Association suggests Joshin Station on the Tsurumai Line (about 20 min walk). There is no parking and no drop-off area at the arena, and taxi apps cannot be used around the venue from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.

Tips
- Tickets go on sale on May 15, 2027 (the banzuke rankings are announced on June 28).
- The Japan Sumo Association's English site links to the official ticket seller, Ticket Oosumo, which has an English version. A handling fee is added to the ticket price.
- Box seats (masu-seki) are cushions on the floor. Chair seats are the arena's regular seats on the second floor, about 50 cm wide with cup holders.
- There are stairs, slopes and steps on the way to the seats, and you cannot take a wheelchair to your seat except in the dedicated wheelchair spaces — buy those if you need step-free access.
- Ringside tamari seats are for ages 16 and over only, and eating, drinking, photos and phone use are not allowed there. Anyone aged 4 or over on the day needs their own ticket.
