Around 900 cherry trees of roughly ten varieties surround Nagoya Castle's moats and grounds, including the unusual pale-green Gyoiko variety that blooms about two weeks after the main Someiyoshino display.
Background
The castle was built in 1610 as a stronghold for the Tokugawa shogunate; the current keep is a 1959 reconstruction after the original was destroyed in WWII air raids, and the surrounding cherry trees have made the moat one of central Japan's signature hanami spots.
