Maiduru Park, built on the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, holds around 1,000 cherry trees across its stone-walled terraces, with the Fukuoka Castle Sakura Matsuri lighting the ruins after dark during peak bloom.

Background

Fukuoka Castle was completed in 1607 for the Kuroda clan; though the keep no longer stands, several turrets and gates survive among the extensive stone ramparts, giving the cherry blossoms a hilltop-ruins backdrop distinct from the reconstructed keeps at castles elsewhere in Japan.

Getting there

About a 5-minute walk from Akasaka Station or Ohori-koen Station (Fukuoka City Subway).

Tips

• The park adjoins Ohori Park and its large pond, making it easy to combine a castle-ruins hanami walk with a lakeside stroll in the same visit.
• Climbing to the highest surviving turret platforms gives an elevated view over the blossoms and central Fukuoka beyond.
• The park itself and most of its roughly 1,000 trees (19 varieties) are free to walk any time. Only three specific light-up areas — Sakura-en, the Otakayashiki ruins and Tamon-yagura — charge admission during the festival: ¥600 for one, or ¥1,500 for a set covering all three, with high-school age and under free.
• The three paid areas each run their own light show combining illumination with music, distinct from the general night-time lighting of the rest of the park.
• The 2026 festival dates (Mar 25 – Apr 8) were themselves extended from an original shorter run, so it is worth checking the official saku-hana.jp site for the current year's exact dates rather than assuming they repeat.
