The Kyushu Basho is the last of the six Grand Sumo Tournaments of the year, held over 15 days each November at Fukuoka Kokusai Center by Hakata Port. Every rank of the professional sport competes on each day, from teenage recruits in the morning to the top-division wrestlers, the ozeki and yokozuna, in the late afternoon. It decides the final title of the year and is the only chance to see a full tournament in Kyushu.

Background

Grand sumo holds six official tournaments a year, each lasting 15 days: three in Tokyo (January, May, September) and one each in Osaka (March), Nagoya (July) and Fukuoka (November). The November tournament is known as the Kyushu Basho after the island Fukuoka sits on, and its schedule is set by the Japan Sumo Association years in advance.

Getting there

No train station is next to the venue; take a Nishitetsu bus. From Hakata Station (stop F in front of Fukuoka Center Building): bus 88 bound for Chuo Futo to Kokusai Kaigijo/Sunpalace-mae, or bus 99 bound for Hakata Futo to Kokusai Center/Sunpalace-mae. From Tenjin (stop 2A in front of Solaria Stage): bus 80 bound for Chuo Futo to Kokusai Center/Sunpalace-mae.

Tips

• Tickets for every day of the 2026 November tournament are already sold out, according to the Japan Sumo Association's English site. The next chance to see sumo in person is the January tournament in Tokyo, whose tickets go on sale on December 5, 2026.
• Bouts run all day: the lower divisions start in the morning, the juryo ring-entering ceremony is around 2:15 PM and the top-division (makuuchi) ring-entering ceremony around 3:40 PM, with the last bout around 6:00 PM (times are the Association's approximate guide for Tokyo).
• Box seats (masu-seki) are sold per box and you sit on cushions on the floor; if sitting cross-legged for hours is hard, choose chair seats instead.
• Ringside tamari seats are for ages 16 and over only, and eating, drinking, photos and phone use are not allowed there.
• Anyone aged 4 or over on the day needs their own ticket, and a handling fee is added to the ticket price.
