Yamadera — officially Risshakuji Temple — is a mountainside temple complex reached by climbing 1,015 stone steps through ancient cedars, and in autumn the payoff is spectacular: from the cliff-hung Godaido hall at the top, the entire valley spreads out below in full fall color. Peak viewing runs late October to early November. In the same window, the temple mountain is illuminated at night; the grounds themselves close after dark, so the light-up is admired from the town at the base.

Background

Risshakuji was founded in 860 by the priest Ennin as a Tendai Buddhist temple. It is best known as the place where haiku master Matsuo Basho, visiting on his Narrow Road to the Deep North journey in 1689, composed his famous poem about cicada cries sinking into the rocks.

Getting there

Take the JR Senzan Line to Yamadera Station — about 20 minutes from Yamagata Station or roughly an hour from Sendai — then walk five minutes to the temple entrance. The Senzan Line runs about once or twice an hour, so check return times before you climb.

Tips

• Admission to the mountain is ¥300, paid at the Sanmon gate before the steps begin.
• Wear proper shoes and allow 40-60 minutes up — the 1,015 steps are uneven stone and can be slick with fallen leaves.
• Climb in the morning: light hits the valley in front of the Godaido viewpoint best before noon, and tour groups arrive after 10am.
• The night illumination is viewed from the town below, not inside the temple (the mountain closes after dark) — time an early-evening soba dinner in Yamadera village around it.
